How it works

Your visit, step by step.

No surprises, no jargon. Here is exactly what happens when you come in for a custom mouthguard or occlusal splint at our West Wodonga clinic.

Step 01

Consultation

We talk through whether you need a custom sports mouthguard, a bruxism night splint, or another appliance — and recommend the right option based on your sport, grinding habits, or bite.

Step 02

Digital scan

We take accurate upper and lower digital records of your teeth so the fit is snug without being bulky — and precise enough that it will not shift when you take a hit or clench overnight.

Step 03

Lab fabrication

Your mouthguard or splint is made in our own in-house lab here in West Wodonga. Because we control the process, we can adjust thickness, retention, and finish to suit your specific needs — not a one-size template.

Step 04

Fit and care

We check comfort and bite, make any immediate adjustments, and show you how to clean and store it properly. Most Albury–Wodonga patients leave with their finished appliance at this second appointment.

Why custom beats boil-and-bite for Albury–Wodonga players and grinders

Shop mouthguards are generic — made for an average mouth, not yours. A custom mouthguard made from a scan of your teeth stays in place better, feels slimmer, and lets you speak and breathe more naturally. For contact sports like AFL, rugby, and boxing, that difference matters every time you take contact. For night grinding, a pharmacy splint simply cannot match the precision of a lab-fabricated occlusal splint.

For sport and for grinding — two different appliances

Not every guard does the same job. A custom sports mouthguard is built to absorb and distribute impact — relevant for AFL, rugby, hockey, boxing, and basketball players across the Albury–Wodonga region. An occlusal splint is designed around clenching and night grinding, protecting your teeth and jaw joints from the pressure of bruxism. We make both, and we will tell you clearly which one you actually need.

Made locally, adjusted locally

If the edge feels rough after a few nights, or it needs a tweak after a big game, bring it back to our West Wodonga clinic. We can refine it here without sending anything away — usually while you wait.

Questions

Things patients usually ask.

Are these only for athletes?
Not at all. Custom mouthguards from our West Wodonga clinic serve two very different groups — sports players who need impact protection, and people who grind or clench their teeth at night. If you wake up with jaw soreness, headaches, or your partner notices grinding sounds, an occlusal splint may be exactly what you need. No sport required.
How long does a custom mouthguard last?
A well-cared-for sports mouthguard typically lasts one to three seasons depending on how hard you play and how often you wear it. Occlusal splints for grinding tend to last longer — often three to five years — because the forces involved are more predictable. We can assess the wear on your existing guard and let you know if it is time for a replacement.
Can I choose colours?
Yes — sports mouthguards are available in a range of colours and dual-colour combinations. Popular with junior players and sports clubs who want to match team colours. Occlusal splints are typically clear, as discretion is the priority for something worn overnight. Let us know at your consultation and we will show you the options available.
